What is a Personality Disorder?
A personality disorder is a type of mental health condition characterized by rigid and unhealthy patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that deviate from cultural expectations. These patterns often lead to difficulties in relationships, work, and daily functioning. There are several types of personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder. Each type has its own set of symptoms, but common features include emotional instability, distorted self-image, and difficulty managing relationships.
Personality disorders are often treated with psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). In some cases, medication may also be prescribed to help manage symptoms, especially if the disorder co-occurs with other mental health conditions like depression or anxiety.
