What are Psychotic States?
Psychotic states are episodes in which an individual experiences a loss of contact with reality, often marked by hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there) and delusions (false beliefs). These episodes can be caused by mental health disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and can also be triggered by substance abuse, particularly with drugs like methamphetamines or hallucinogens.
Psychotic states require immediate medical intervention, as they can lead to dangerous behavior and severe emotional distress. Treatment typically involves antipsychotic medications and therapy to help stabilize the individual and address underlying causes, whether they are psychiatric or substance-related.
