What is Malnutrition?
Malnutrition refers to a condition that occurs when the body doesn't receive the nutrients it
needs to function properly. In the context of addiction, malnutrition is common due to poor
dietary habits, loss of appetite, or substances that suppress hunger. Individuals struggling with
addiction often neglect their health, choosing drugs or alcohol over nutritious food, leading to
vitamin and mineral deficiencies, muscle loss, weakened immune function, and other health
issues.
Substance abuse can significantly impair the body's ability to absorb nutrients, especially in
cases of alcohol use, which can damage the digestive system and liver. This lack of proper
nutrition can worsen physical and mental health challenges, contributing to fatigue, irritability,
depression, and cognitive difficulties during addiction and recovery.
Treating malnutrition in addiction recovery involves restoring proper nutrition through a balanced
diet, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and regular medical care. Many recovery programs
offer nutritional guidance as part of a holistic healing approach, helping individuals regain
physical strength and improve overall well-being.
